It is a simple, basic, human function. Breathing. But its’ significance is overlooked, perhaps because we do it naturally. But are we breathing the right way? Our breath is more than fuel for our bodies - it is the power needed to help control our nervous system, which leads to our physical fitness, mental health, and overall well-being. Each breath that we take contributes to the building of our bones, blood, muscles, brain and organs.

Breathing the correct way energizes us more than what we eat, how much we exercise, what our body looks like, or how young/old we are. Athletes are well aware of this, and many concentrate on their breathing techniques to enhance their performance and endurance.

In the fast-paced world we live in, we tend to rush our breathing, resulting in over-breathing, which makes it difficult for our bodies to efficiently use oxygen. Taking long deep breaths, inhaling through the nose, for 5 seconds, and exhaling for 5 seconds helps control the flow of oxygen. Breathing more slowly, less often, and being aware of each breath is also a way to calm ourselves.

Each breath we take is vital to our existence and may even lead to a longer life. It’s worth taking some time to learn about this critical function of our body.
