In fact, we recommend setting an alarm on your phone every afternoon to remind you to take a timeout from whatever you are doing and spend five to ten minutes concentrating on inhaling deeply and exhaling to release. This process automatically slows your heart rate, can help lower blood pressure, and enables you to focus back on the matters at hand with a renewed sense of energy and attention.
Walk (or Run) It Out
Whatever your preference, get moving! Your body sends signals to your brain to release more feel-good chemicals, including endorphins and serotonin after a workout. This can help diminish the negative feelings that happen during periods of high stress and empower you to move forwards with a sense of control. If you find yourself stuck with an obstacle, take a quick five minute walk around the block then return and tackle the problem.
It’s a difficult thing to do in this day and age, but the constant bombardment of social media, news, pings, emails, and so on can accumulate and escalate any feelings of stress. Set aside a specific period of time each day where you unplug and walk away from all of your devices. This includes laptops, cell phones, e-readers, and any other technological items you use. By taking a break, you can instead concentrate on being present and in the moment. Don’t worry; they’ll be waiting for you upon your return.
There’s nothing like a shared connection with a good friend. Oftentimes one of these conversations can bolster your mind and wellbeing. The next time you feel overwhelmed, try phoning a friend or making a coffee date with a neighbor to help you blow off some steam and recharge!
