Structural Integration
What is structural integration?
Structural integration is a modality that focuses on lengthening, stretching and softening connective tissue or fascia of the body to restore postural imbalances, improve range of motion and bring a feeling of ease in your own body.
What is Fascia?
Fascia is the thin connective tissue that surrounds and holds every muscle, organ, blood vessel, bone and nerve fiber in place. Fascia is elastic and should move freely with muscles and bones but things like injury, stress, repetitive movements (related to work or sport), dehydration and aging can cause it to lose some of its elasticity, causing it to become short, tight and dense.
Who can benefit from structural work?
-
Have lack of range of motion
-
Some joint dysfunction
-
Musculoskeletal disorders (scoliosis, nerve impingements, ect)
-
Pain
-
Decreased performance (grip strength)
Who should not receive structural work?
-
Anyone experiencing inflammation around affected joint
-
Active cancer unless released by doctor
-
Chemically compromised- this includes prescribed pain management medication as it has dulled the senses, making it so you cannot accurately communicate to much pressure with your therapist. This can even make a situation worse rather than better.
-
Compromised immune function- it can put more stress on immune system
-
Pregnancy- can receive superficial (lighter) techniques
-
Loss of joint integrity
