Fall's treasures

Fall's treasures

Anita S.

Shifting winds, leaves transforming from green into vibrant shades of warm colors, pumpkins making their annual appearance, and the overwhelming scent of cinnamon spice filling the air - it must be fall, the best season of the year!

Farmers plant seeds which bear nutritious fruits and vegetables throughout the year, but the fall harvest tends be the most glorious. Not only is it significant because of its’ abundant and varied bounty, but also because it leads to the forthcoming holiday season, with its’ respective traditions, celebrations, and festivities.

In anticipation of the forthcoming change of season, as we transition from warmer temperatures to cooler ones, and as farmers around the world prepare to gather their crop, consider how our personal life choices are similar to the the law of the harvest: reap what is sown. The beauty of this law is that it is a choice; to plant a seed, and watch it develop, or to not plant one at all. Dreams, wishes, hopes, intentions - these may all be followed by planting a seed, even a tiny one.

Similarly, the seeds that we sow will one day bear fruit. If we sow our seed with a mission in mind, and with good intention, nurturing and caring for it, there is a high probability that this seed will grow and advance us. Some seeds will need continuous watering and attention, taking years to grow, involving energy and hard work; others, very little oversight, but an acknowledgement that the seed has been planted. Those seeds which develop over time teach us patience and perseverance. If we give up on these slow growing seeds, we will never realize their potential and what they could become.

In addition, fall reminds us that nature progresses and develops, and that this is an opportunity of a time of change and development of ourselves, to allow new thoughts to enter. Maybe this is why fall is traditionally the time when schools start up - it is the new cycle of growth and expansion of the mind. Fall is symbolic in many different ways, the falling leaves representing letting go of things we have been holding onto, in order to make space for the new. Fall into it!
