National Therapeutic Recreation Awareness Week
Jul 10, 2017
Since 1984 the second week of July has been National Therapeutic Recreation Week. According to the American Therapeutic Recreation Association, Therapeutic Recreation, or recreational therapy, is a process that utilizes recreation and activity-based systems to address the needs of individuals with illness and/or disabling conditions. The systemic process is used as a means to psychological and physical health, well-being, and recovery. Overall, recreational therapy is designed to restore and rehabilitate and person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health, and wellness. Additionally, it can aid in reducing or eliminating the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations that are caused by an illness or disabling conditions.
Recreational therapists are people specifically qualified for these individuals, situations, and systematic processes and assist their clients in developing skills and knowledge and behaviors for daily living. Therapeutic recreation is important because research shows that people with active, satisfying lifestyles will be happier and healthier. However, not everyone can live the same active lifestyle. Therefore, recreational therapists are their to help clients perform daily activities to improve their physical and psychological states. Recreational Therapy/Therapeutic Recreational (RT/TR) activities are chosen based on each client and their personal interests and lifestyle. This helps the client engage better in therapy and eventually apply what they are doing into to real life situations.
Elements Massage supports and recognizes Therapeutic Recreation week as an important subject to be aware of. These recreational treatments are made to restore, remediate, and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and promote health and wellness, similar to what a massage provides. Therapeutic massages are also a form of recreational therapy, helping a client’s functionality.
Recreational therapists focus on improving an individual's overall stress, function, wellness, and quality of life. Massage therapy goes hand in hand with techniques that recreational therapists use on their clients due to the regular massage sessions can help reduce stress, relieve pain and pressure, help with body function and muscle problems, and promote wellness. This also gives patients a way to relax during their recreational therapy sessions. Therapists are also able to develop and alter their techniques depending on the client, providing them with a more specific and beneficial session for their specific needs. Incorporating regular massage therapy into a patient's routine can help improve their overall muscle function, stress, muscle relaxation, and their mental or wellness state.
Elements Massage is proud to recognize such an important and crucial subject. Not only can massage therapy help people relax, relieve pain, and more, but it can also help alter and better someone’s overall quality of life.
