Thankfully Family Health and Fitness Day, which falls on the last Saturday of September, is a great way to stay active and find new ways to do so as well. It also encourages families to embrace physical activity and fitness together and have fun with it, rather than needing to go to the gym.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy Awareness Month

Aug 28, 2017 Health

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic disorder that affects the part of the nervous system dealing with voluntary muscle movement. In this case, the muscles do not receive signals from the nerves, creating the atrophy portion of the disease. Atrophy means getting smaller, which is what happens when the nerves do not tell the muscles to be active. SMA is caused by a deficiency of a motor neuron protein called SMN (survival of motor neuron). This protein is necessary for motor neuron function, and therefore muscle function as well. The lack of SMN is caused by a genetic mutation/flaw.
