Keep Your Cool While Keeping Cool

Keep Your Cool While Keeping Cool

The heat of the summer is still in full effect and we’re loving every second of it! That’s because we’re taking the time to stay cool. We’re loosening up, letting go, and being mindful of our body and emotions. However, the stress of life doesn’t cool down in the summer months, so we’ve found some great ways for you to regulate your mind while regulating your body temperature.

Massage

Incorporating massage into your weekly or monthly routine can greatly reduce stress. Massage therapy can lower your heart rate, release endorphins, and relax your muscles. It can be challenging to relax when your body is tense; but, by encouraging blood flow, your body can send blood to your muscles which removes waste and relieves tension.

Regular massage is a wonderful thing to add to your after-work routine. It relaxes you, relieves pain, and lowers stress levels. What could be better?

Breathe

This one may seem obvious, but most people tend to take quick, shallow breaths when anxious and under a lot of stress. This sends a message to your brain which reinforces your fight-or-flight mode.

To become more mindful of your breathing, try using a 1:2 ratio. This means that you exhale twice as long as you inhale. You can also hold your breath in for a moment or two before releasing it. You can practice breathing techniques daily, so that in times of high stress, you can easily slow yourself down.

Understand your Thoughts

Stress will continue to build if you keep feeding the beast. By creating irrational and overwhelming thoughts, your mind and body will continue to react to them in a negative way. When a thought creates stress, ask these questions of yourself:

  • How likely is this to actually happen?

  • What triggered this thought?

  • What’s the worst thing that could come of this?

When you understand your thoughts, you can more easily apply relaxation techniques.

Release, Release, Release

We often carry our anxiety from work or school home with us. Leave the unwanted house guest at the door by going for a walk. Physical exercise is a great tool to put your emotions into. Not only are you bettering your health, but it’s a good way to release all of your stress and anxiety of the day. According to the Centers for Disease Control, adults should strive to hit 10,000 steps per day. Get on those walking shoes!

Find a Creative Outlet

If you’re looking for an excuse to bring out your inner child, this is it! Adult life isn’t always easy, so it’s important to find creative outlets to let off some steam. The best news is you can take a creative break right at your work desk. Sketching is an easy, mindless activity that entertains your brain while bringing a sense of calmness to your body. Studies have shown that sketching can enhance your memory, improve your communication, and more. If drawing isn’t your style, bake a treat or listen to your favorite music album.

Cool your Body

Overexertion in hot weather can add to stress. Here are some great ways to keep yourself cool in the heat:

  • Stay hydrated

  • Take cold showers

  • Use lighter bedding

  • Eat light and healthy foods

  • Stay inside when heat is excessive

  • Use cold skincare products

It’s easy to get caught up in stress at work or even at home, but there’s always something you can do to manage your stress. Whether you take one minute or one hour, give yourself permission to make the changes your body is telling you it needs. Massage can easily be fit into even the busiest of schedules. Not sure what kind of massage therapy might be right for you? Don’t stress! Our staff at Elements Massage is here to help you. Call or text us at (414) 332-3260
