Ayurveda, an Indian Sanskrit word, is an ancient healing science, evolving from principles of natural remedies and methods. The foundational principle of Ayurveda is the belief that health and wellness are rooted in the balance of mind, body and soul. Whenever there is a disruption in any one of these, it leads to illness, stress, injury.....creating havoc within the body.
Guided by the laws of nature, the Ayurvedic approach identifies three types of energy which flow throughout the body. Each individual energy type serves an important purpose by creating movement within the body, enabling nutrients to reach cells, allowing for proper digestion, maintaining cellular structure, therefore promoting efficient functionality of the body. A key belief of Ayurveda is that the human body is made up of the same elements as all of nature, and that each one of us has a predominance of one element. Once we decipher which element is strongest within ourselves, we can alter our lifestyle, and make relevant changes, to live our best life.
Whereas western medicine relies on drugs and procedures to rid the body of impurities and disease, Ayurveda focuses on maintaining the energy balance, preparing the body to heal itself, rather than concentrating on the malady. Implementing lifestyle changes, including following certain dietary regimens, eliminating stressors, using specific herbs, adding massage into the routine, are all measures used in Ayurvedic science. It is used for daily health maintenance, and is also applied towards the treatment of chronic health conditions.
There are numerous benefits to following this ancient science. Additionally, Ayurvedic practices are holistic, involving only wholesome, nutrition rich remedies, and strength building activities. There are no drugs to ingest. Structuring our life around the integration of mind, body and soul is key to maintaining the balance and stability to live a peaceful existence.
