What Massage Can Do for Your Migraine

What Massage Can Do for Your Migraine

Mackenzie Barrow

Everyone knows that migraines are no fun. Nobody likes to be in pain and the pain caused by migraines can often be debilitating. Those who suffer from migraines look for ways to help relieve this pain, massage is one such method.

Using the right massage technique and the right pressure can be key to helping relieve pain from a migraine. Effective techniques therapists use includes deep tissue, Swedish, and myofascial trigger point-focused head and neck massage. Another effective method is Shiatsu. Shiatsu technique focuses on pressure points along muscle lines, nerve pathways and blood vessels, along with gentle stretching.

There are also basic massage techniques that migraine sufferers can use at home.

  1. Lace thumb pads under the orbital ridge (under eyebrow bone) close to the bridge of the nose. Press up and inward to the bones, to your comfort level. This is a natural place for people with migraines to carry tension. Focusing on this area first can jump-start the healing process.
  2. Use two fingers to pinch the fleshy area between the thumb and pointer finger, feeling your way around for any sore areas.
  3. Place a tennis ball under the foot while in a seated position. Roll the ball around, focusing on tender areas, and apply pressure. Repeat on the other foot.
  4. An area not instinctively thought of when treating a migraine is to focus on the masseter muscle (chewing muscle). Many people grind their teeth. Locating trigger points around the jaw can also relieve pressure. Some therapists pinch this muscle using the index finger inside the mouth and the thumb on the surface of the face.

If you suffer from migraines, there are many methods you can use to contribute to your self-care. Getting a massage from a therapist who is experienced with treating migraines can be tremendously beneficial in finding lasting relief.
