Injury Massage is a modality of massage that focuses on injured areas by manipulating specific muscles to help promote healing and improve mobility by reducing inflammation and increasing circulation.

Stages of injury

  • Acute (1-7 days post injury) can not receive massage in the first 48 hours. Only Cold treatments should be done.

  • Subacute (7-21 days)

  • Chronic (21+ days)

What Injuries can be improved by receiving massage?

Benefits of cold and heat therapy:

Cold therapy-

  • Analgesic- Pain relief

  • Anesthetic- numbing effect of prolonged use

  • Antispasmodic- the relaxation of convulsion and muscle spasm

  • Reduce swelling

  • Stimulant- for short application as it brings the body out of homeostasis. The body will perceive this as a threat, reacting by stimulating the systems.

Used for:

  • Sprains

  • Contusions

  • Local inflammation

  • Headaches

  • After trigger point therapy

Heat therapy-

  • Analgesic- Pain relief

  • Antispasmodic- the relaxation of convulsion and muscle spasm

  • Antiseptic- kills harmful bacteria

  • Diaphoretic- sweating can help elimination of toxins

  • Sedative- soothes and relaxes

  • Stimulant- for short application as it brings the body out of homeostasis. The body will perceive this as a threat, reacting by stimulating the systems.

Used for:

  • Muscle and joint stiffness

  • Muscle guarding

  • Muscle spasms

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Pre-massage

  • Pre- stretching
