Tight Hip Flexors?
Elements Massage Phoenix Camelback Feb 9, 2018
Hip flexors are a group of muscles that start at the top of your thigh and connect your upper leg to your hip area. They are involved in practically every type of movement that involves the lower body. The reason why they are called hip flexors is because they are the muscles that create flexion, the bending movement, between your bones and limbs at a joint. In this case, the hips!
There are a few main culprits when it comes to the causes of tight hip flexors including:
Staying in a seated position can tighten your hip flexors because it forces the muscles to remain in a shortened position for long periods of time.
Another cause is attributed to overuse or repetition of the same movement. For example, running, as a form of intense exercise, can cause this area of the body to tighten.
What to Do
As is the case when anything is amiss, you want to identify the right course of action to change it. For tight hip flexors, one of the best things you can do is to stretch. Give yourself the chance to loosen your muscles by performing these few stretches every day. The kneeling hip flexor stretch is a great hip opening position as is a psoas quad stretch. Unsure of what these are, ask!
Massage is also a great tool to combating tightness in the body. Deep Trigger Massage or Sports Massage are two different modalities that deliver targeted benefits to problem areas.
