In accordance with the new restrictions effective Tuesday, November 17, we remain open on our normal schedule.  No changes were made to our industry as massage therapy has not been shown to be a vector for spreading the virus.

We continue to follow our careful protocols.  We thank our clients for wearing masks at all times in our studio, and look forward to helping you manage stress and pain, the Elements Way.

The Benefits of Geriatric Massage

The Benefits of Geriatric Massage

Mackenzie Barrow

With age comes many new challenges. Pain, depression, disease, and isolation can put a damper on our seniors’ quality of life. Geriatric massage helps bring some of that vitality back in a psychological and physiological way.

Geriatric massage provides not only a therapeutic experience, but also a compassionate touch. “For elderly clients, touch can awaken, comfort, and soothe. It improves blood circulation, which is essential for inactive individuals. It can improve balance and coordination with increased body awareness, helping your loved one’s ability to avoid falls and injuries. It can improve joint mobility and ease the pain of arthritis, and whenever pain is reduced, feelings of sadness and depression are naturally reduced as well. Massage also works directly with the nervous system in many ways, bringing a greater sense of peace and ease. And simply being in the company of someone who wants to offer loving touch adds icing to the cake,” says Cindy Williams, LMT for ABMP.

Common benefits of Geriatric massage include:

  • Increases blood circulation
  • Increases lymph circulation
  • Decreases blood pressure
  • Reduces depression
  • Stimulates bowel activity and reduces constipation
  • May improve mobility
  • Improves condition of dry/cracked skin
  • Reduces pain
  • Improved quantity and quality of sleep
  • Increases vitality by reducing pain, increasing mobility, and improving sleep
  • Promotes mental and physical relaxation
  • Improves self-esteem and sense of well-being
  • Decreases feelings of isolation

Are there any risks involved with geriatric massage? Because massage is so customizable in terms of depth, pressure, style, techniques, and focus areas it is easy to adapt to individual clients’ unique needs. It is safe for elders to receive massage in most cases. If there any doubts or questions about whether massage is right for your loved one, it is always recommended to consult a physician. Make sure to disclose all health conditions to your massage therapist.
