Is there anything worse than when you wake up in the morning and stretch your legs for a nice leisurely stretch when all of a sudden you feel a tiny cramp. Before you know it you are sitting straight up, grasping at your foot or leg which has seized up in excruciating pain. Yes, this is a charley horse. And it’s a horrible way to start your day.
Although the name is funny, a charley horse is technically an involuntary muscle contraction. Most often, these cramps occur in the lower limbs or feet but people have experienced them in the arms, neck, shoulder, or even stomach area.
Muscle cramps happen for a variety of reasons. The most common are cited as:
- Bad circulation
- Pinched nerve
- Lack of mobility
- Insufficient stretching
- Potassium or magnesium deficiency
If you experience this situation regularly, you should speak with your doctor. They may be able to recommend a course of action to reduce their frequency. Other steps you can take to mitigate Charley horse’s include changing your diet to concentrate on whole, nutritious foods, supplement with magnesium and calcium, and drink plenty of water.
