The Benefits of Cupping Therapy

The Benefits of Cupping Therapy

Elements Massage Central Scottsdale

You may have heard of cupping but have no idea what it is. At Elements Massage Central Scottsdale, we focus on all things wellness. Cupping is a form of alternative therapy that involves using special cups made from glass, bamboo, silicone, or earthenware. These unique cups are placed on the body to create suction to aid with decreasing pain and inflammation while lending a boost to blood flow and relaxation.

Rooted in History
This form of therapy is said to of originated in China with proponents claiming that the art of suction can facilitate the flow of “qi” otherwise referred to as life force. Cupping is attributed to the Taoist alchemist and herbalist, Ge Hong, a practitioner that lived from 281 to 341 A.D.

Cupping in Application
During a cupping session, cups are gently placed directly on the skin then heated to create suction into place. As the air inside the cup cools off, it creates a vacuum that can cause your skin to turn slightly red as your body’s blood vessels expand. On average, each cup is in left in position for up to three minutes at a time.

Cupping therapies have shown to address a variety of issues including:

  • Disc herniation
  • Arthritis and fibromyalgia
  • Skin issues like eczema and acne
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Migraines
  • Allergic and asthmatic congestion

Many of the benefits of cupping relate to that of deep tissue massage. By increasing blood circulation, your body experiences a release of tension, can better repair itself at a cellular level and can rejuvenate your connective tissue.

As always, talk to your doctor about any course of action you anticipate taking when it comes to your health.
