The brilliantly colored leaves have all faded and fallen, the air is turning crisp and cold, the daylight is shorter, and soon, the snowflakes will be descending on us here in New England! It’s a picturesque and beautiful time, without a doubt. The stores are decked out with festive holiday cheer and sounds of “the most wonderful time of the year” ring in our ears as we prepare our homes for the warming presence of loved ones. It’s almost magical.
But, it’s stressful too.
As the minutes, hours, and days tick by, we get closer and closer to gift-giving deadlines. The cleaning and chores pile up. The kids seem to have even more activities than usual, and we need to find something to wear to three different dinner parties. As wonderful and beautiful as it is, this time of year can feel like a pressure-cooker for some.
How will you keep yourself from getting worn down and stressed out as the holidays fast-approach?
As noted by the American Massage Therapy Association, “The holiday season is filled with joy, but for some it can also result in increased stress and anxiety. Massage therapy is one way to feel your best during the holidays.”1
Massage, also according to the AMTA2, works to physiologically reduce stress in the body by decreasing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure as a person relaxes. Besides which, it just feels amazing!
When we take the time to identify our own needs and put into practice addressing them, we fill our own reserves. When we feel well taken care of, we are less likely to crack under pressure. We cannot stop the holiday rush that’s around us; but, we can center ourselves so that it doesn’t overtake us. And, we can give ourselves and those we love the best gift ever - the gift of our presence in the moment with the people we care about most.
