For all the things a pregnant woman is told she cannot do during her pregnancy, massage is a good thing. Provided the pregnancy is healthy and the woman does not have a history of miscarriages, there are many benefits to pre-natal massage*.
Benefits to Pre-natal massage:
- Lessens sciatic pain
- Reduces swelling in hands, feet, ankles
- Aids in relaxation which leads to better sleep
- Strengthens the immune system
- Increases circulation
- Increases flexibility
Don't expect to be face-down during any part of your massage. Pre-natal massage is mostly a side-lying massage and does not include any deep tissue or trigger point. The massage can be done throughout the pregnancy although some studios and massage therapists do not offer first trimester massage.
*Always check with your doctor to make sure massage is right for your pregnancy.
