Eucalyptus: Good Health Does Grow on Trees!

Shannon K, lmt Jun 19, 2016

At Elements Massage in West Allis (and all Elements nationwide), we recently began offering Aromatherapy in our massage sessions. We have four choices: Lavender, Eucalyptus and two blends named Vitality and Radiance. They are distributed by Bon Vital and mixed fresh right before every massage at our studio. You can add aromatherapy for only $10 extra per massage. The room fills up with the wonderful scent and wafts even a little bit down our hallway. The essential oil is mixed into a lotion, inhaled before your session and used on your skin during your massage. Although all four oils have their own personalities, I am going to give you some facts about eucalyptus in this post.

There are several types of Eucalyptus, but the kind we use here is Eucalyptus Globulus. It is great at breaking up phlegm and creating a cool feeling in the respiratory system. It can also be used for muscle and pain relief that may give a cool, cleansing feeling. A bonus is that it also assists in fighting germs, and may help inhibit the growth of viruses associated with daily life. It is generally steam distilled from the leaves. An additional benefit of eucalyptus is that it can help with headaches if you are having issues with sinus related head pain.

There are some safety precautions you should consider before adding on this specific, on any, essential oil. The oil should not be used on children under ten years old and asthmatics should be careful when choosing this one. Although research shows it can be helpful with bronchial asthma it might also set off an asthma attack in certain situations. If taken internally (which we are not doing during massage anyway) it may cause inflammatory disease of the GI tract and bile ducts, and severe liver disease.

Emotionally, Eucalyptus Globulus is very uplifting, clears the mind and aids in concentration. The essential oil cools and cleanses to reduce negative emotions. It soothes exhaustion and encourages a sense of extra support.

If this sounds like something you may be interested in just let the Front Desk team know when you come in and it can be added right before your session. The best part about it is that it is made fresh right before your massage by mixing the essential oil into it’s own personal blue bottle and will only be used during your massage and never reused on another client.
