Don't let your mood FALL down

Alexis M., lmt Nov 11, 2016

There are two types of people when it comes to the fall season. Those who embrace and love it and those who suffer from S.A.D.  Defined by the mayo clinic “Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year” Studies have shown that 1 in 5 people are affective by this disorder.

Why does SAD happen?

  • Your biological clock (circadian rhythm). The reduced level of sunlight in fall and winter may cause winter-onset SAD. This decrease in sunlight may disrupt your body's internal clock and lead to feelings of depression.

  • Serotonin levels. A drop in serotonin, a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that affects mood, might play a role in SAD. Reduced sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin that may trigger depression.

  • Melatonin levels. The change in season can disrupt the balance of the body's level of melatonin, which plays a role in sleep patterns and mood.

What are the symptoms?

  • Irritability

  • Tiredness or low energy

  • Problems getting along with other people

  • Hypersensitivity to rejection

  • Heavy, "leaden" feeling in the arms or legs

  • Oversleeping

  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates

  • Weight gain

Fortunately, there are some alternative activities that people who undergo this disorder can do to keep an uplifted spirit.

Activities such as

  • Exercise

  • Yoga

  • Trying a new hobby you always wanted to try

  • Pushing your knowledge limit

    • Try to conquer a new language

  • Massage therapy

    • Our personal favorite

How can massage help me?

Massage is a great way to decrease stress and tension, not to mention it just feels wonderful. Studies have shown that getting a massage on a regular basis leads to decrease in cortisol and adrenalin- two main chemicals that lead to stress. There is also increased levels of serotonin and dopamine which are natural chemicals in our brains that promote happiness and self-pleasure.
