Desk job delima

Elements Massage | Vienna Sep 10, 2015

Have a desk job? Regularly stuck at that desk for 8 or more hours a day? This is all too common to many of us in the Northern VA area. The hustle and bustle of life take a toll on our bodies and many times we forget to invest in ourselves. If you haven't considered massage for pain and stress relief yet here are a few reasons why you should take a second look.

-Studies done by the Health Research Institute have shown that massage is just as effective for pain relief as taking an NSAID  (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) such as Advil. Sounds like a win win to us!

-When you have a therapeutic massage your body releases certain chemicals naturally. (Oxytocin and serotonin specifically) Oxytocin has been called the hormone of happiness. Honestly, who doesn’t need extra happy hormones after a tough day of work? The other chemical released into your body is serotonin. This works closely with the oxytocin in your body to have you feeling like a million bucks after your therapeutic session.

-Myofascial release: This has recently become a huge trend in the fitness industry and there is no question why. This technique, when used in massage, breaks up the “knots” in the fascia and increases blood flow local to the area. This also increases oxygen delivery to the area. What does all that really mean though? Your muscles will become more flexible and you will have a restored range of motion.  It has been reported that over 65 million Americans suffer from chronic and recurring back pain. With myofascial release there is a direct connection to this. When done correctly, myofascial release loosens the muscles surrounding the problem area and many times this can give immediate relief.
