If you’ve had shin splints before, you are well aware of how painful the condition can be. The term shin splints, otherwise known as medial tibial stress syndrome, refers to pain that occurs along the front of the larger shin bone located in your lower legs(also called your tibia).
A common condition among active types, particularly those that include repetitive motions like running, jumping, or dancing into their activities, shin splints are often the result of increased activity levels that overwork the muscles and tendons surrounding your bone tissue.
Diagnosing Shin Splints
Attributed to repetitive stress on the shinbone and surrounding connective tissues, your risk increases during sudden upticks in frequency and intensity of activity levels. It can further be exacerbated by starting new types of programs (like a running program) or performing regular activities on unusually hard surfaces. Additionally, you may be particularly prone to shin splints if your feet have high arches or you lack proper, supportive footwear.
To address the tenderness associated with shin splints, you should do a few things:

To prevent this painful condition from recurring, avoid doing too much high-impact activity at one time. Another good step is to select the appropriate supportive footwear. This might mean arch supports or shock-absorbing insoles to lessen the impact of your foot strikes.
