Treating Restless Legs Syndrome with Massage

Treating Restless Legs Syndrome with Massage

Elements Massage Scottsdale East

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a nervous system disorder in which you experience a strong urge to move your legs. Individuals that suffer from this condition often report uncomfortable sensations such as the irresistible urge to move legs, pins, and needles, or even itchy feelings - like bugs crawling on the lower limbs. Most often, symptoms are said to be the worst when at rest, sitting, or sleeping.

While adult men, women, and children are reported to struggle with RLS, it is more prominent in middle-aged individuals and generally affects women more so than men. There is currently no known cause of the disorder but factors associated with its development include:

  • Chronic Diseases
Certain medical conditions like diabetes, iron deficiency, Parkinson’s, and more are associated with RLS.

  • Medications
Antidepressants, cold and allergy medications containing antihistamines, certain antipsychotic drugs and other medications are reported to worsen RLS symptoms.

  • Pregnancy
Many women experience RLS during their pregnancies. While this can be attributed to the extra pressure on the body or the increase in blood volume, most women find that their RLS goes away within a month of their baby’s birth.

Massage for RLS
Massage can reduce RLS symptoms by increasing circulation. The boost to blood flow can bring oxygen and nutrients to areas of the body that need it most, while streamlining the toxin removal process.

If you suffer from RLS, come talk to our team about how we can help you find relief. Other recommendations aside from regular massage sessions include getting regular exercise, taking hot and cold baths, and if you are a smoker, this is a sign you should quit!
