Understandably, people who are in prolonged pain, whether they’re recovering from an accident or have a chronic condition, are sometimes hesitant to pop health-harming pills in order to cope. More and more people are turning to natural pain relief practices, like massage.

Since prescription and over-the-counter painkillers tend to work for just short periods of time, they don’t provide much long-term release from pain unless you keep taking them. Massage, on the other hand, literally helps repair muscles and reverse the discomfort caused by chronic pain conditions.

Massage, unlike many painkillers, is not addictive. Of course, you may constantly look forward to your next massage session (plenty of our clients do!), but there’s no physical addiction to receiving massage therapy. You also may feel what some call a “natural high” after a massage due to the chemicals your brain releases during the session, but this isn’t harmful like the opioid-induced delirium produced by pills.

The only real undesirable outcome of massage performed by a licensed professional may be a bit of light soreness and swelling on the areas that received the most attention during the session.

Massage therapy performed by unlicensed therapists, however, is a different story. There are tons of health risks involved, so always choose licensed massage therapists instead.

Easy to Combine with other Remedies

After receiving massage regularly for a period of time, your pain levels will likely decrease significantly. This makes it much easier to begin doing physical activities, such as yoga and deep stretching, which are excellent natural pain relief methods.

If you have pain that’s specific to your neck, shoulders or back, communicate that with your massage therapist. They will gladly pay special attention to the areas that give you the most trouble, adjusting the pressure level to fit your needs as best as possible.
