What to do before a Massage to have the Best Experience

Oct 19, 2017

It’s no secret that regular massage therapy has a ton of benefits, but there are actually several things you can do to make your session go even better. Learn exactly what to do before a massage to make your experience as relaxing as possible.

What to do before a Massage: 7 Steps to Deep Relaxation

1. Stay Hydrated

If you ask a professional what to do before a massage, one of the first things they’ll tell you is to stay hydrated. This will keep your muscles pliable and easy for your licensed massage therapist to work with.

2. Avoid Drinking Alcohol

While a few glasses of wine followed by a massage may sound like the ultimate way to relax after a rough week, the two don’t actually mix so well together. Whether you feel like it or not, having alcohol in your system dulls your senses. That means you may be out of touch with your body and not fully indulging in your massage.

Also, alcohol and massages both dehydrate the body, meaning hangovers can be intensified by a massage.

3. Take a Warm Shower

Taking a shower with warm water will also help your muscles loosen up and put you in a relaxed state before the session begins. Not to mention, heading into your appointment fresh and clean is courteous to your licensed massage therapist. Just take it easy on the perfume and cologne.

4. Let your Stress go First

Obviously, when you’re stressed out and someone tells you to “just relax,” they’re wasting their breath. However, before you get to your massage appointment, truly do your best to free your mind of stress and anxiety for a little bit.

Don’t let traffic on the way to the massage studio frustrate you, don’t fret over upcoming deadlines at work—don’t think about anything other than the utter relaxation you’re about to experience.

This is your time to relax, and the less stressed you are, the better overall experience you’re going to have.

5. Arrive a Little Early

As relaxed as massage studios like Elements of Rockville Centre are, we still have to schedules to abide by, and other clients to attend to.

If you’re a new client, you’ll need to fill out a few forms in person before your massage, unless you do them online. If you’re an existing client, be early anyway because if you’re late, it may cut into your massage time.

6. Enter the Judgment-Free Zone

Licensed massage therapists do not care about your weight or the fact that you forgot to shave your legs. They also understand that natural bodily functions happen, especially during massage.

Let us repeat: they don’t care, and will not judge you in the slightest!

7. Be Ready to Communicate

If there is anything you’d like your licensed massage therapist to know, whether about a medical condition or just the fact that you’d like to keep some of your clothes on, understand that you’re encouraged to communicate with them. That goes for during the massage, too.

They truly care about helping you be comfortable and relaxed, and will be glad to accommodate you in any way they possibly can.

Now that you know what to do before a massage, your next one will be even better than the last!
