St. Baldrick’s Day is a charity that has one mission: finding a cure for childhood cancer. Every two minutes a new child is diagnosed with cancer. Here at Elements Massage of Rockville Centre, we are proud to stand with such a great organization.
Five Fun Facts About St. Baldrick’s Day
1.St. Baldrick isn’t named after anyone
The name St. Baldrick’s Day didn’t derive from a person, but rather a mashup of the words “St. Patrick’s Day” and “bald”. Both things sum up the essence of St. Baldrick’s Day.
2.They are the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants
St. Baldrick’s is the largest privately-funded organization for childhood cancer research grants. They do not accept any government funding to help them. That’s why it’s so important to donate to this amazing cause.
3.It started with a bet
Three friends and colleagues decided to challenge each other to shave their heads in honor of childhood cancer research. Their original goal was to raise $17,000, $1,000 for each of the 17 heads they were shaving that day. However, they exceeded that goal exponentially by raising $104,000 and shaving 19 heads. Since 2005, they have helped raise over $282 million!
4.Everyone is a volunteer
Whether you are a St. Baldrick’s event organizer, barber, sponsor, donor, board member or person getting their head shaved, it is all on a volunteer basis. 100 percent of the revenue generated goes right back into funding childhood cancer research.
5.Over 500,000 heads have been shaved
Over 500,000 people have decided to stand with these young kids affected by childhood cancer by shaving their heads. This selfless act has inspired others to show their support in any way they can.
St. Baldrick’s Day is a day when people all over join together for something bigger than themselves. No matter how you choose to get involved to help St. Baldrick’s; you are doing something great for someone who needs a little help. In the 1950’s, almost every kid diagnosed with cancer passed away from it. Today, 90 percent of kids diagnosed with the most common type of cancer are cured.
