As much as we love the summer, we certainly don’t love the overbearing heat and the inevitable sweatiness that ensues. To combat the effects of sweat, oil and sunscreen, we’ve put together this all-natural skin care routine for you to follow!
How to Adjust your Skin Care Routine for the Summer
It cannot be stressed enough: drink your water! If your body isn’t hydrated from the inside, it’s not going to be well-moisturized on the outside. Plus, with all the other benefits of proper water intake, your overall well-being will improve.

2. No Days off from Washing
In the summer, it’s more important than ever to wash your face twice a day—once in the morning, and once in the evening.
Between sunscreen, makeup and sweat, your pores can get clogged quickly. That means that even after a long day of summer fun, you must wash your face before going to sleep.

3. Exfoliate…Less Often or More Often?
There’s a bit of contention about how often you should exfoliate during the summertime. The truth is, it depends.
Exfoliation can drastically increase your sensitivity to the sun. So if you plan on getting a serious tan this summer, cut the number of times you exfoliate in half. Those who don’t get a ton of exposure to the sun don’t have to vary their exfoliation plan from their normal skin care routine.
4. Use a Light Moisturizer
Although your skin doesn’t get as dry in the summer as it does during the winter, you should still moisturize regularly. The only difference is that your lotion should be lightweight, since heavy moisturizers may cause you to sweat and clog your pores.

5. Practice Proper Sun Care
Overexposure to the sun is a leading cause of wrinkles, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the outdoors. Rather than spending your summer stuck inside, use these sun care tips:
- Apply sunscreen before you go outside, so it has time to set
- Use a sunscreen that helps with other issues, like inflammation
- Don’t substitute makeup for sunscreen, even if it has an SPF
- Don’t use last year’s bottle of sunscreen, especially if it’s expired
6. Ditch the Unhealthy Food
Parties and barbecues are classic summer staples, but remember that alcohol and soda will dehydrate you. Fried foods are full of grease which is bad news for your skin.
Luckily, the summer is when most fruits and vegetables reach peak ripeness and flavor. They also happen to be wonderful for your skin.
Replacing unhealthy snacks with fruits like berries, melons and cantaloupes and vegetables like cucumbers and peppers delivers essential vitamins to your skin, giving it a wonderful glow.
7. Wear Breathable Material
Tight, heavy clothes can trap heat, causing rashes, itchiness and buildup of sweat and oil. Keep a wardrobe of clothes made of materials like cotton, linen and silk for those days when you know you’re going to be in the heat.
