5 Awesome Ways to Improve Self-Esteem Today
Feb 15, 2018
Any time you’re feeling down about yourself, the go-to advice everyone gives is “stop thinking like that!” or “think happy thoughts!” Sure, they mean well, but it’s obviously not so simple to just change the way you think. Instead, try out these things you can actually do right now to improve self-esteem.
5 Things you can do to Improve Self-Esteem
1. Focus on your Strengths
Everybody has strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you’re an excellent artist, but not such a good chef. Does the fact that you’re bad at cooking make you worthless? Of course not. It just means you’re not perfect, but neither is anybody else in the world.
Elements of Rockville Centre recommends dedicating more energy to things you’re already good at and love so you get even better at them. Mastering a skill is a great way to improve self-esteem! Also, next time you fall short doing something you’re not great at, it won’t sting nearly as bad.
2. Exercise and Movement
During and after exercise, your brain produces endorphins that make you feel great. In the long-run, you’ll develop a better physical self-image and feel a sense of achievement about your progress.
3. Daily Positive Affirmations
Write down three things you appreciate about yourself every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the morning, the afternoon or at night. It doesn’t matter that the three things are, whether they have to do with achievements you’re proud of or character traits you have.
After a few weeks, reread your affirmations. You’ll notice that you possess more good qualities than you thought!
4. Be Kind to Others
Although “treat other people how you want to be treated” may sound like something you tell a child, there’s real value in putting it into action.
Being kind to other people is psychologically proven to make you feel happier about yourself. Acts of kindness can take any form:
- Holding the door for someone
- Paying for coffee for the next person in line
- Volunteering at a local charity or shelter
- Encouraging a friend or family member when they’re feeling down
- Giving someone a genuine compliment
5. Accept Compliments
The next time somebody offers you praise, accept it. Don’t downplay whatever they’re complimenting you on. Thank them, and take a moment to reflect upon it. People don’t go out of their way to compliment others for no reason at all. You earned that compliment, so revel in it and let it make you feel good!
The best time to improve self-esteem is now! Work these five tips into your daily routine and you’ll begin to understand your true worth.
