Proper Hydration, a Critical Element

Elements Massage Paradise Valley Mar 13, 2015

Drinking enough water is a struggle that many people face daily. Whether too busy with work, on the go with the kids, or just plain forgetful, it’s easy to eschew the recommended intake of water but did you know that there are many ways that your lack of hydration can negatively affect your health?

The Truth about Dehydration
Dehydration is defined as when your body doesn’t have enough water to perform it’s necessary functions. Symptoms can include:

-Dry skin

-Headaches

-Thirst

-Sleepiness or fatigue

-Constipation

-Lightheadedness and dizziness

Dehydration can be mild or severe. On the more extreme end of the spectrum, dehydration can result in death. But what we are talking about here is a normal lack of drinking water for the typical person (not those living at high altitudes, vigorously exercising, or individuals with illness). We are talking about individuals that would benefit from switching a cup of coffee or soda out for H20!

Water and How Much

We’ve all heard the drink eight glasses of water a day advice but few of us adhere to this guideline. In fact, a good rule of thumb to follow is to try and drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. It sounds like a lot but if you consider drinking a glass or two before your work day starts, several with your lunch, keep a bottle handy to drink throughout the rest of your day, and top it off with more ounces at home, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is.

Celebrate the Benefits

Since water is your body’s principal component, it makes sense that maintaining a good amount of water helps your body operate more efficiently. From energizing your muscles to keeping your skin looking fresh, enabling your kidneys to rid your body of toxins to controlling appetite and caloric intake better, there are many different benefits to drinking enough H20.

Massage and Water Intake

Being properly hydrated before coming in for your next massage can boost the benefits you receive from a session. By enabling greater flexibility and the suppleness of muscles, your massage may not only feel better but actually accomplish more work. Post-massage staying hydrated can also help your body remove toxins and waste released from your muscles during your massage

The next time you head into our studio, be sure to drink water both before and after to help you look and feel your best!
