Massage Therapy as Alternative Medicine in the New Year
Jennifer Sullivan Jan 5, 2016
Massage is adopting a new look and definition in 2016. In the past few years, massage therapy has gone from being seen as a mere luxury to being recognized as an alternative medical treatment - an absolute necessity for individuals trying to manage stress, anxiety and physical maladies.
When did the shift in perception occur and why? According to Jerrilyn Cambron, board president of the Massage Therapy Foundation, " Currently, the medical community as a whole, is more accepting of massage therapy." In fact many massage therapists now have active, fruitful relationships with conventional care providers, according to Cambron.
Why are more people looking to massage for relief? They had run out of other options. Once they adopted the mind-set that massage would soothe their pain or anxiety, they quickly realized this was the missing piece to a previously unsolvable puzzle.
According to a recent consumer survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association, 77 percent of the respondents said their primary reason for receiving a massage in the past year was medical or stress related.
There are many reasons why massage can help various medical issues, some questions still remain. Studies suggest that massage increases blood flow in the body and improves circulation. This finding alone is proof that massage is beneficial.
Types of Massage
There are many different styles and types of massages and many different types of massage therapists. The best way to choose a massage therapist is to first be clear about what results you are looking to achieve from your massage. Stress relief, pain relief, relaxation or all of the above. Secondly, be clear about the areas in your body that need attention. The clearer you can be about what you need, the better equipped the massage therapist will be once you arrive. Following are a few different massage modalities you may wish to explore.
Swedish Massage- Typically a light to medium pressure massage used for relaxation and to reduce stress.
Deep Tissue Massage - Deep tissue massage is focused and specific work that uses firm pressure. These techniques are used to penetrate the layers of muscle in order to relieve pain and release any knots and tension.
Pre-Natal Massage- Prenatal massage consists of Swedish Massage techniques and may incorporate some stretching to relieve tension and pain. Because no pregnancy is "routine," Massage Therapist customize the massage to meet individual's needs. Prenatal massage has been proven to relieve aches and pains and reduce anxiety and aid with swelling.
Hot Stone Massage - Hot smooth stones are used along with massage oil in this style of massage. The stones are heated in hot water and the Massage Therapist uses the stones along with broad hand strokes. The heat from the stones helps relax muscles and is very soothing.
Sports Massage - Sports Massage is specifically designed for people involved in physical activity, although one does not need to be an athlete to enjoy this style of massage. It can include stretching, compression, and range of motion techniques.
