Massage Helps Alleviate Arthritis Pain

Elements Massage Ken Caryl Feb 24, 2015

For arthritis sufferers, the wintertime can be a brutally painful time of year. Some people even claim that they can predict the onslaught of cold weather as their joints begin to stiffen and ache. While not a treatment in and of itself, massage is commonly used as a complement to other traditional therapies to help alleviate the pain of arthritis.

Arthritis can impede your quality of life by interfering with life’s normal activities. Finding a coping strategy that works for you can help provide routine and relief from the pain and lack of mobility that can occur with the many different forms of arthritis. Several different types of arthritis that massage has shown an ability to help with are:

Osteoarthritis

This type of arthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is known to affect millions of people. Typically, this form of arthritis takes place when the protective cartilage around the joints in the hands, hips, knees, and spine wears through.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Different than osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of your joints, which can result in painful joint deformities and possible bone erosion. It can also affect other bodily organs such as lungs, blood vessels, the skin and eyes.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia occurs when the brain processes pain incorrectly. This wire crossing essential means frequent and constant bouts of muscular-skeletal pain along with sleep problems, unstable moods, and exhaustion or fatigue.

When it comes to massage, the manipulation of bodily tissue with application of pressure and tension along muscles, tendons and ligaments can help provide much needed relief. Several benefits of massage for arthritis sufferers are as follows:

  • Improved circulation
  • Reduced swelling of limbs and joints
  • Better pain management
  • Decreased stiffness
  • Boost in sleep and immune functions
  • Lowered production of stress hormone, Cortisol
  • Boosts range of motion and flexibility

Whether for the hands, hips, back, or feet, massage can bring much needed attention and relief.  Be sure to talk to your health care provider before seeking massage treatment and also remember that communication is a key component in getting the type of massage you want.  At Elements Ken Caryl studio, we are here to help you discover the positive benefits of therapeutic massage.

One of the old folk remedy for arthritis is to drink raw potato juice. To make it, wash a potato (don't peel it), cut in into thin slices, place it in a glass of cold water, and leave it overnight.
