May is High Bood Pressure Education Month

May 30, 2012

About 75.5 million people in the U.S. have high blood pressure, also called hypertension, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Regular therapeutic masage is proven to lower blood pressure and strengthen the immune system

In the study of  “The Effect of Deep Tissue Massage on Blood Pressure and Heart Rate” 263 participants volunteered to receive deep-tissue massage to examine its effect on systolic and mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate.  This study demonstrated a high correlation between deep-tissue massage and reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, the study’s authors said.  “This data is encouraging and positive, representing optimism and a hopeful outlook for research in this area.”

In another study, massage was found to reduce blood pressure and stress levels in African-American women.    Massage Magazine May 2011
