Massage and Migraines

Migraines affect more than 30 million Americans, and they can be caused by a variety of things: muscle tension in the neck and shoulders; stress at work, home or school; sensory stimuli such as bright lights or loud sounds; and even trouble sleeping. Migraines are different from other kinds of headaches in a couple of important ways: they tend to be habitual or chronic, and they often progress through four stages.
The four stages of a migraine are prodrome, aura, headache and postdrome. Each of these is usually accompanied by sets of symptoms, such as irritability, then physical sensations (tingling in arms or legs), then pain, possible nausea, and finally exhaustion. However, not everyone experiences all four stages. Migraines can be excruciating, leaving the person suffering from one feeling washed out or even ill. People with migraines or a history of them (family or individual) often are tested and diagnosed by a neurologist. From this point, the focus becomes treatment and managing the symptoms in order to minimize the effect they can have on daily life.
Therapeutic massage offers an alternative or complimentary treatment method to the usual pain medications most doctors will recommend. Because massage is an excellent way of reducing stress and tension, it is a great technique for reducing the frequency and severity of migraine headaches. According to studies done by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, participants who received massage therapy reported a reduction in the occurrence of migraines, sleep disturbances, and distress symptoms. It also increased serotonin levels in the participants as well – a neurotransmitter associated with elevated mood and reduced pain.
At Elements Massage at Scottsdale Promenade, our trained therapists are able to put to use techniques in combinations to achieve these desired goals. If you’re one of the 30 million Americans suffering from migraines, see how regular massage therapy can help you manage your symptoms and improve your life.
