Elements Therapeutic Massage Scottsdale Promenade ~Massage Beats Medication for Low Back Pain in New Study
Jan 29, 2013
If you or someone you know suffers from low back pain, massage may provide more relief than traditional treatments. The Group Health Research Institute in Seattle recently conducted a study on 400 patients with low back pain over a 10 week period. Study participants were divided into three groups. One group received traditional medical care, which included pain medication, muscle relaxants and/or physical therapy. The other groups were given one hour per week of either structural massage or relaxation massage.
Study results showed that the participants who received massage therapy found that their pain was significantly reduced or completely eliminated after 10 weeks. They were also able to be more active, spend less time on bed rest and took less pain medication than those who received traditional treatment. Those receiving traditional care did not fare as well – only 1 in 25 reported significant improvement. Even more interesting is the fact that even 6 months later, those in the massage groups still felt the positive effects of their 10 weeks of massage therapy.
Researchers aren’t sure exactly why massage proved so effective in this study, but it does seem to show that massage therapy is a worthwhile treatment for back pain.
