Why Proper Hydration Is Vital—Before and After Your Massage
Emily Allison Aug 14, 2016
Hydration is important all year round—and particularly in these hot and muggy middle Tennessee summer months. But did you know that hydration is especially important before and after you get a massage?
Any massage therapist will tell you that they can always tell whether or not their client has been drinking enough water prior to their massage. There are several reasons for this:
- Toxin elimination. Well-hydrated muscles feel more fluid, pliable and workable than dehydrated muscles and are able to work toxins through the muscles and out of the body more quickly and efficiently. Toxins can be stored for long periods of time in the body in fat cells, and when massage stimulates those fat cells they need to be flushed out of the body. Drinking lots of water aids in this process.
- Brain composition. Since 70-80% of your brain tissue is water, a dehydrated brain is a stressed brain—and stress is the last thing you want during your massage experience. Being properly hydrated allows your brain to “rest” and enjoy all the benefits of your massage.
- Massage aftercare. A massage can sometimes leave you with sore muscles for a short period of time due to having longstanding pains or kinks worked out. The chances of a feeling of “soreness” or “fever” are greatly reduced by properly hydrating yourself, since your muscles will be more pliable in the first place.
Most doctors recommend that the average person consume at least 8 glasses of clean water per day in general. Drinking enough water improves the quality of your sleep, muscle tension, energy, stress, weight loss efforts and more. But when you are about to get a massage—or directly after, it is appropriate to drink a little extra water and avoid dehydrating beverages like coffee, soda, and alcohol. At Elements Massage Franklin, we also make sure that each and every one of our clients walks away with a bottle of water and knows to take it easy for a little while to let their body recover.
