Common Questions About Prenatal Massage

Emily Allison Jun 29, 2016

At Elements Massage Franklin, we have many women who benefit from the practice of prenatal massage during their pregnancy. Prenatal massage can work wonders with women experiencing pain, stress, tension and aches due to pregnancy. But some women have questions about prenatal massage—how exactly it works, when it is safe to get one, and more. Here are a few of the most common questions we receive about prenatal massage, and their answers!

  1. Can I even get a massage while I am pregnant? Obviously, the answer is yes! Prenatal massage can be conducted anytime after the first trimester. There are various schools of thought across the massage industry of course, but at Elements Massage Franklin we only administer prenatal massage during the final two trimesters. Remember that being pregnant is indeed a “medical condition,” so if you are scheduled for a regular massage, let your therapist know if you are or think you may be pregnant!
  2. How safe is it to get a prenatal massage? A prenatal massage after the first trimester is perfectly safe—right up until the very day of delivery. But for those with doubts, it is also important to note that prenatal massage requires a special, separate certification from a general massage license, and those who undergo this training are taught the safest and most up-to-date prenatal massage techniques. Elements Massage Franklin has several therapists with this certification!
  3. How does a prenatal massage differ from a regular massage? Unlike a regular massage, a prenatal massage is conducted primarily with the expectant mom lying on her side. This is to reduce discomfort and because many women have difficultly lying on their stomach or flat on their back during pregnancy, especially during the later months. Beyond that, prenatal massage can vary as much as a regular massage in pressure, focus areas, etc. It all depends on what you are comfortable with!

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, but our qualified therapists at Elements Massage Franklin will be able to help you and address any specific questions and concerns you may have. Give us a call today at (615) 771-0003 to speak to a therapist or scheduled your prenatal massage appointment, or visit our website at www.elementsmassage.com/franklin to learn more!
