SUMMARY

I came to massage therapy via partner dance and martial arts. In both of those body practices, I have been fascinated by the ways we can use our bodies to listen to, influence, create together, and destroy each other. In 2023, I was looking to change careers, and a serendipitous life event reminded me that the deep listening practices I love in movement and martial arts also exists in healing arts. I decided to try out massage therapy at East West College of the Healing arts and quickly learned I really do love body arts of all kinds.

SUCCESS STORIES

I had an elder client who had some significant trauma history experience a major emotional shift during a session; at the beginning, he was guarded and tense, telling me "I have never experienced this thing people call relaxation," but further into the session he was sinking significantly into the table, telling me it was weird but he thought he might be relaxing!

This shift also resulted in some challenging feelings rising to the surface, which is not unusual when the nervous system settles from an alarm state into a restful one. Because I'm not a mental health therapist, we didn't unpack those feelings there during the session, but I was able to check in with the client about what he needed to feel supported at that moment in the treatment room. Through carefully respecting his boundaries and working at his pace, we were able to find a place of trust where he could access new parts of himself physically and emotionally in a way that felt safe for him.

WHAT MAKES YOUR MASSAGES UNIQUE?

"It's not what you do but how you do it." I believe bodies have things to tell us, and they appreciate being listened to, even when they're being a literal pain in the neck. I also believe all body work is nervous system work, so I tend to move slowly and center deep listening, intuition, and curiosity as much as knowing "techniques" and common tension patterns. Clients often tell me they appreciate my therapeutic presence and feel like I'm really listening to their body. Trauma awareness and active informed consent are also very important to my practice.

WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST WHEN RECEIVING MASSAGE?

I love a slower, intentional pace and feeling presence rather than effort from my practitioner. I also love being checked in with and reminded to ask for changes to make me more comfortable within the work being done.

WHAT KEEPS YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT MASSAGE?

Like martial arts or dance, there is unending potential for depth and styles of practice. Therapeutic touch is an essential part of human wellness. People who are fully well see themselves and each other with more curiosity, kindness, and connective potential and are less willing to accept harms to themselves or others.
