Stress is like Holding a Glass of Water

At a conference, one of the speakers, Bob Tschannen-Moran, was addressing the concept of stress management. At one point he held up a glass of water and asked how much the full glass weighs. After hearing a few guesses, Bob shared this truth with his listeners: “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes, and that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry all of our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.”
Stress is something we all deal with on a nearly constant basis, but how we handle it can make a huge difference in how it affects us. Stress can lead to serious health consequences like headaches, fatigue, pain, and sleep problems. It can also aversely affect your behavior or mood, altering your appetite, ability to focus, and sociability. Purposefully intervening on your own behalf in order to reduce stress is important in order to keep your health and sanity. Take time out of your day to read and relax; make sure you’re eating healthily to give your body every tool it needs to deal with daily stressors. But sometimes these smaller steps aren’t enough. In order to help yourself let go of stress and anxiety, try a therapeutic massage. This beneficial health treatment can reduce muscle tension, pain, lift moods, and help ease restlessness – all of which will help reduce stress. Don’t hold on to the anxiety and stress in your life – it will only weigh you down and make you unhappy.
