Should You Get a Prenatal Massage?
Pregnancy and massage can be a controversial topic; for some people, they are two things that simply do not go together. There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding the benefits and risks of prenatal massages. Generally speaking, however, the debate is not about if expectant moms should participate, but rather, when they can safely start.
Prenatal massage is different from traditional massages, largely because of the size of the tummy: she cannot have a massage while lying on her stomach. Most of the massage takes place either on her back or on her side, depending on the stage of the pregnancy and what makes her the most comfortable.
The focus of a prenatal massage is relieving pain for the woman. Pregnancy can be very uncomfortable, especially in the later stages, and prenatal massages are an extremely effective way to ease sore and tense muscles that have been pulling double duty for several months.
There are some schools of thought that say a woman can have a massage at any stage during her pregnancy, but at Elements Massage Franklin, we only conduct prenatal massages after the completion of the first trimester (the first fourteen weeks). There is a large body evidence behind this policy. Several studies and analysis have shown, time and time again, that this is the absolute safest decision for both mom and baby. Prior to the beginning of the second trimester, certain pressure points on the body can pose a danger to the tiny developing fetus, points that cease to be a cause for concern later on in the pregnancy.
In addition to only conducting massages after the first trimester, prenatal massages also require a special certification that goes above and beyond the certification for a standard massage. All of our prenatal massage therapists at Elements Massage have been trained and certified to ensure maximum safety for all our beloved moms as well as their babies.
After the first trimester, it is safe to get a massage right up until you deliver. We have even had moms come in for a massage in the morning, and have their baby in the afternoon. We only ask that you refrain from going into labor in our office! We have extensive health training, just not when it comes to delivering a baby!
So if you are an expectant mom past your first trimester (or you love someone who is), call Elements Massage Franklin and make an appointment today! We will be happy to talk more with you about the safety and specifics of prenatal massage. We will walk you through the process so you will be comfortable from start to finish.
