Communicating with your Massage Therapist
Lisa Seals Feb 19, 2015
The sales and customer service team at Elements Massage of Franklin has the pleasure of interacting with clients. At the front desk, many questions arise regarding the “etiquette” of massage and how to communicate with your therapist. These things, especially communication, can greatly impact your massage experience. I hope that by reading this blog, it will boost your comfort level and help you achieve the optimum result.
Our first contact with you will likely be on the phone when you make your appointment. At Elements Massage, we stand apart from most massage studios because it is our goal to match you with the right therapist. We will ask you a few simple questions regarding your health and what type of pressure you prefer so that your specific needs are addressed. Even if you’ve never had a massage before, we can offer suggestions and help put you at ease. We understand that your time is precious and we want to make the most it while you’re here. We have a wide range of certified therapists who specialize in various techniques so that we can accommodate you.
When we welcome you as a new client, we ask you to complete a simple intake form. Although you don’t need to divulge your entire medical history, we do ask a series of basic questions that will help your massage therapist know how to best serve you. Questions like “are you pregnant,” or “have you had any injuries and/or surgeries in the last two years” are meant to keep you safe, so it is important to be forthcoming.
Once on the table, clients may feel uncomfortable letting their therapist know if the pressure is too much or not enough, or if even if their needs are being addressed. I assure you, we welcome communication! No massage therapist at Elements would ever be offended by your request to make a change. In fact, they are grateful for your openness. Our LMTs are great at what they do, but they are not very equipped at mind-reading. Adjusting pressure to your comfort ensures that you have a better experience. After all, that’s why they went into the massage profession in the first place. But just in case, our therapists are trained to check in with you during your massage to make sure the pressure is just right! Remember, your therapist enjoys his or her profession and relishes the opportunity to discuss it with clients. If you are curious about something your massage therapist is doing, just ask. Chances are it will begin a positive conversation about your journey towards health and wellness.
If you’re feeling chatty, our therapists are friendly folks and welcome conversation. But if you’re craving silence, enjoy a peaceful session. Feel free to let your therapist know that you’d rather not talk so that you can fully relax.
