How Massage Can Boost Your Immunity

Elements Massage Chandler Village Jan 28, 2014

With cold and flu season in full swing, massage is a great way to give an extra boost to your immune system in order to avoid the crummy sicknesses that inevitably make the round after the holidays.

Aside from frequent hand washing and avoiding sick friends, co-workers, and neighbors, to stay well this winter, massage therapy is a great way to strengthen your immune system and promote your body’s natural defenses.

With massage, routine treatments can help boost immunity by lowering the production of the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is responsible for destroying your immune cells, which explains why it seems easier to get sick when overstressed.  Another benefit of massage is improved circulation, which means that your body’s fluid moves around more and your lymphatic system (responsible for circulating lympocytes that attack harmful substances in your body) are stimulated. You body is therefore more primed to attack and destroy foreign matter like germs before they cause illness!

Aside from the above, improved circulation can also lead to more body heat, a healthier blood pressure level, and increased oxygen throughout the body which can make you feel better overall in the dreary winter months.  Not to mention that regular massage sessions provide much needed relaxation and an increase in seratonin production.  Sounds like a great way to give yourself a mid-winter boost!

Be sure to take care of yourself by drinking plenty of water, getting quality sleep, diminishing stress levels, and getting exercise to complete the cycle of well-being this season and to help avoid catching the yearly bug!
