Massage: The Key to Unraveling Your Stress

Stress is a natural part of life, but some rather undesirable maladies can result for too much stress. These include but are not limited to problems such as: headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety (http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/effects-of-stress-on-your-body). When the body is under a lot of stress it releases a hormone from the adrenal gland known as cortisol. Cortisol induces high blood pressure, reduces the strength of your immune system, as well as aiding in the development of the maladies listed above. Massage directly attacks cotisol by increasing the body’s ability to produce endorphins. The aforementioned endorphins not only boost the body’s immune system but simultaneously lower the levels of built up cortisol in the tissues of the body. This is why when receiving a massage it is important to consume a lot of water; your body is flushing out numerous toxins along with the stress induced hormone cortisol.
Massage is a natural, drug free way of reducing the negative effects of stress induced illnesses. Think of how much daily stress you face and how often that stress is relieved. I was astounded to realize that I am stressed more than I feel relaxed, and couldn’t help but realize how horrible for my body this is. I may focus on eating well and exercising, but in the epochs of my daily life rarely do I find a moment to sit down and breathe. I therefore decided to try to receive biweekly massages in order to help boost my immune system (as mine is very weak because I have asthma), help control my headaches, and prevent the horrid insomnia that has been plaguing me since a young age. Not to hyperbolize the results of my little experiment, but I found that by receiving a massage twice a month my overall emotional state as well as my physical state of well being had increased immensely. I not only had more energy, an improved disposition, but I actually was able to sleep six hours in a night – as opposed to my usual three hours of sleep.
Doctors everywhere, including from the World renowned treatment center The Mayo Clinic, are recommending massage a safe treatment accompaniment and alternative. Though the results may not be drastic anything you can do in order to help cope with the stress of daily life will work wonders in the long term aspects of your health.
