After every massage, I ask my client to drink plenty of water for the next 24 hours. No one really asks why. But, in case you are wondering...
A massage releases metabolic waste from muscle tissue where the muscles were tight or knotted up. Those areas did not have proper circulation to get rid of the waste. After your massage, all that extra waste is stirred up and the water helps the kidneys get rid of it instead of allowing it to redistribute itself back into the body.
Another reason why I ask clients to drink plenty of water after their massage is to flush out lactic acid buildup created during the massage. In a massage we work all of your muscles, this creates lactic acid as much as if you had a workout. Just like drinking water to keep from getting sore after your gym visit, you need to drink water after your massage to prevent next-day soreness.
