Natural Remedies for Headaches

What are some great and effective ways to treat your headache naturally? Here are a few easy remedies to incorporate into your lifestyle.

 

  1. Stay Hydrated!

What a simple and easy remedy! One of the symptoms of dehydration is HEADACHES. Therefore, make sure to continue drinking water throughout your day if you are experiencing headaches. According to Mayo Clinic, "the recommendation for daily water consumption for adult men is 15.5 cups of water, and for adult women 11.5 cups of water" (Water: How Much Should You Drink Every Day?). Be sure to add extra water into your diet if you drink alcohol and caffeine, eat a lot of salty food, or are physically active. If the taste of water bores you, add some lemons, limes, cucumbers, strawberries, or whatever fruit you choose to flavor. 

  1. Get a Monthly Massage

Believe it or not, we store a lot of our mental stress in our bodies. This is when massage becomes a great remedy for headaches. The relaxing effect that massage has on our bodies helps our minds to relax and relieve some of that mental stress that lives inside of our bodies. Trigger point therapy is a great option for those experiencing headaches. There are specific trigger points that are related to headaches.

  1. Herbal Foot Bath

"This could be used as a remedy for headaches, or simply just a relaxing thing to do at the end of a stressful day. Sometimes, we experience tension headaches because our energy is stuck in our heads. Herbal foot baths help to draw the energy back down into the feet. Once the energy begins the move down, then it also has the ability to move the stress and toxins out of the body. 

          How to make your own herbal foot bath:

You can come up with a combination of your own favorite herbs, here is my favorite: 

a.    Use a combination of 1 ounce of hops, 1 ounce sage, 1/2 ounce rosemary

b.Simmer the herbs in a large pot with a lid for 5-10 minutes 

c.Let the water cool, the water should still be hot, but not hot enough to burn you. BE CAREFUL!

d.Put your feet in! Cover the basin with a towel to keep the heat in

e.Listen to some relaxing music and take some full deep breaths

f.Perhaps sip on a relaxing tea to melt the stress away

If you would like to add to the effects of this foot bath, feel free to add some epson salts for detoxification, or essential oils such as peppermint or lavender for added effects"(General Suggestions for a Healthy Nervous System.)

 

  1. Drink a Relaxing Tea

My favorite choice of tea for headaches is peppermint. It tastes good and its easy to find in stores. The Lamiaceae plant family, the mint family, are known to be cerebral vasodilators. What does this mean?! That the mint family opens up the blood vessels to the brain. Another great choice for headaches, especially when related to stress, is chamomile or lavender, or perhaps a combination of the two. If this isn't doing the trick I would try skullcap, Scuterllaria Lateriflora, in small frequent doses daily. 

  1. Diffusing essential oils 

Essential oils are the oils found in plants that give off the fragrance. Some essential oils, such as peppermint, rosemary and lavender can help ease the discomfort from headaches and migraines. Be sure to watch for the caution label! Essential oils also make for a great addition to herbal foot baths!

 

6. Devote Time to Relax

Often, we get headaches due to tension. The tension stems from the stress in our daily lives. Take time out of you day for yourself. Whether that means exercising, mediating, arts and crafts, reading, watching your favorite tv show etc...Do something at least once a day that makes you happy and relaxed. 

 

Try these natural remedies the next time you have a headache. These suggestions may even help prevent your next headache from coming on. Be sure to stay hydrated, get your monthly massage, relax with an herbal foot bath, drink some yummy tea, diffuse essential oils and devote time in your day to relax and unwind.
