While we certainly feel that taking care of yourself, in this case getting a massage, is a necessity, and not a luxury, you still want to make sure you are getting all you can out of each session in order to be as cost effective as you can. There are a few items you should consider in order to get the most out of your regular massage.
- Give yourself time before and after your session so you aren't rushed. If you come flying into the studio on your phone wrapping up that last little bit of work right up until you get on the table for your massage, it is going to take you longer to get into a relaxed state. The longer it takes you to get relaxed, the less time the therapist has to actually work on your body. The same is true when the session is over. Give yourself time to slowly get back into your day (if you have to at all). It is never a good idea to jump off the table and run out the door the minute the session is over. Give your body and mind time to adjust to the healing that you experienced during your massage.
- The level of conversation during your massage is generally up to you, but it is generally best to talk less and listen to your body more. It can be very difficult to let go physically when you are engaged mentally in conversation.
- Do your best to let go of the daily worries and stresses while you are in session. There is nothing you can do about the budget or the laundry while you are on the table, so you might as well let go of those type of things for an hour. This is time to focus on yourself, physically by getting a massage and mentally by letting go of things for a bit.
- Communicate with your therapist. Tell your therapist what you want to get out of the session-are you looking for a strictly relaxing experience or do you need a focus on a specific area-if you don't tell your therapist, he or she won't be able to accomplish your goals. If it is too hot or cold, the music is too loud or soft, the pressure is too deep or light you should tell your therapist. They won't be offended, they want to know you are comfortable and getting what you need out of your session.
- RELAX. Even if your session is focused work on a specific injury or pain, it is important to relax. When your therapist moves your arm, leg or head don't feel the need to help. Your arm is not so heavy they need help. This is not your time to work, it is your time to heal. Let us take care of that for you.
The effects of massage are cumulative so it is important to get the most out of each session as you possibly can. Time is the most valuable commodity most of us have, it is important to make the most of it by getting every benefit you can during your massage.
