The Benefits of Prenatal Massage

A woman’s body experiences various intense changes when pregnant. From hormone fluctuations to physical exhaustion, bodily aches and pains in new locations to anxiety about the future, to be honest, pregnancy can be a pretty uncomfortable period of time. The physical and mental stress can cause physiological and spiritual challenges. One way to help address these parts of this special time are through the art of prenatal massage.

Remember, it’s important to discuss your plans with your doctor before adding any supplemental health care to your routine. This is to ensure the best course of action is undertaken for both the mother and baby.

When it comes to actual prenatal massage, there are several different types of massage modalities available to address the pregnant body. From Swedish massage to hot stone, reflexology to cranio-sacral therapy, openly discussing your needs with your massage therapist can establish the exact techniques your mind and body need.

Expectations

A typical massage at our studio is usually between one to two hours. The mother-to-be lays on a massage table with bolsters or pillows to support her developing shape in a way that is comfortable to her. Draped with a clean sheet, our studio rooms feature low lighting and a comfortable temperature to help induce relaxation.

Throughout the massage, the therapist will check in with the client and ensure that pressure is not too hard. For the best experience, it’s important to stay hydrated and not to eat a large meal before heading into any massage! Afterwards, continue to drink water to help your body flush out toxins and promote the many benefits of massage.

Several benefits of prenatal massage include:

  • Can ease troublesome sciatic pain that develops as pregnancy grows
  • Addresses muscle aches and pains, specifically in the lower back area, shoulder, and neck from the additional weight
  • Can reduce muscle cramps and work out hard to reach areas.
  • Boosts circulation and decreases swelling of hands, feet, ankles, and face
  • Promotes production of natural feel-good hormones
  • Helps induce sleep
  • Can provide relief from anxiety and depression

When used throughout a pregnancy, prenatal massage can help establish a healthy mind and body connection while easing the woes and physical symptoms of this unique life experience!
