“This is a cause that is very special to me and members of our staff,” said Aimee Matchette, owner of elements therapeutic massage of Whitefish Bay, who lost an aunt to leukemia in December. “When we learned about sponsoring Team in Training participants, our desire to help our clients feel better as well as help raise money for a good cause seemed like a perfect fit.”

elements therapeutic massage got the idea when employee and certified massage therapist Kelly Gunderson, learned of a similar massage for a cause campaign in Las Vegas. Once a massage therapy school instructor and massage therapist for Cirque du Soleil there, Gunderson was contacted by former student Cynthia De Los Reyes who had been diagnosed with Polycythemia Vera, a blood disorder where the body’s red blood cells are abnormally high, and was giving massages to raise money for her own Team in Training effort.

Proceeds from Massage for a Cause in Whitefish Bay will benefit both the Milwaukee and Las Vegas chapters of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The Milwaukee-area recipient will be Christi, a Shorewood High School senior, who was diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May 2008. Funds raised in the Team in Training program will benefit her treatment.

“So many people are affected by leukemia and lymphoma,” said Matchette. “This is our way of making a difference. And the support of our elements staff has been tremendous in our efforts to raise funds.”

Massage therapist Kristie Pfeil will be donating an additional $5 from each massage she gives during the Team in Training promotion week. And, Gunderson will be donating her time for massages on March 29, her day off, and give 100 percent of all money collected to her former student and friend De Los Reyes.
